The second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now available on Disney+. Early in the episode, which is titled “The Star-Spangled Man”, we got to learn a bit more about John Walker, the man behind the new Captain America’s mask.

While many instantly disliked the new Captain America following his brief appearance in last week’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiere, the latest episode may have left fans feeling a bit more conflicted. On one hand, Walker was shown to have the same insecurities that Sam Wilson felt about picking up the iconic shield. He was also shown to have a glittering military career with three medals of honour to his name.

On the other hand, Walker came across as quite cocky at times, especially when he told Sam and Bucky to “stay the hell out of my way” when the pair decided not to team up with him.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wyatt Russell, who plays John Walker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, shared how his Captain America differs from Steve Rogers.

John’s the type of guy who’s like, ‘Look, you want me to do the job? I will finish the job for you. Sometimes that might require things in the grey areas where you are not comfortable but I am, and I need to be able to do my job.

Russell also spoke about the internal feelings that Walker is going through when he puts on the Captain America suit.

Who am I in this suit? What does it mean to me? What does it mean to the people watching? Everybody has this idea of imposter syndrome to a degree, like even Sam at the beginning. [Sam] didn’t necessarily feel comfortable with being Captain America. He didn’t feel right. Everybody deals with those things differently. So, it’s a big difference between this guy [John] and Steve. He’s a little bit more of a [jump in] head first type guy.

Russell also teased how his role impacts the journey of Sam Wilson within the series. Walker is “a wrench that gets thrown into the whole deal.” He went on to state that he is “an obstacle” in the way of the “hero;s journey” that Sam is on.

You can watch episode 3 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier next Friday on Disney+.
