Marvel’s most famous team of superheroes is undoubtedly The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Until recently though Marvel Studios did not have the distribution rights to the latter two teams including characters like Wolverine, therefore we have not yet seen them in the MCU.
Things do however seem to be hotting up with rumors flying around that Marvel is looking to bring both teams into the MCU. With the recent report that they are eyeing Shia LaBeouf as Ice-Man or Moon Knight, it appears they are looking to move ahead with the introduction of the X-Men sooner rather than later.
We have recently done a recasting of the Fantastic Four (Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and The Thing) and decided to do the same with one of the most popular X-Men, Wolverine. Where previously we based our casting on our own opinions, this time we decided to leave this re-casting up to you, the fans.
Below we have a brief overview of the character and the top five actors you chose to take up the adamantium claws when and if Wolverine does enter the MCU, along with a few honourable mentions.
Wolverine was born around the late 1880s in Canada under the name James “Logan” Howlett. He was the son of wealthy farm owners, John and Elizabeth Howlett, though he is actually the illegitimate son of the Howlett’s groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. After a falling out, Thomas killed John in front of young James, and in retaliation, he discovered he had retractable bone claws coming out of his fists and used them to kill Thomas, which is when he discovered the truth about him being his father. He fled with his childhood friend Rose and grew into adulthood with her and adopted the name “Logan”.
Logan realized he has an accelerated healing ability along with decelerated ageing. This allowed him to serve in both World War I and World War II. He was discovered by a secret military program called Weapon X. Weapon X coated his skeleton in a near invulnerable metal called adamantium. With his newfound animal instincts, he slaughtered his way out of the facility and went by the name Wolverine. Later he met Charles Xavier who explained how he was a mutant and invited him to join his X-Men.
Wolverine is 5’3 and due to his adamantium skeleton weighs 300lbs. He is at least 130 years old, but around early to mid-’40s in appearance. Due to a rare gene in his blood, Wolverine is a mutated human. His mutation gives him the following powers and abilities on top of his retractable claws and adamantium skeleton.
Wolverine Powers and Abilities
- Superhuman Physique: Wolverine’s strength, durability, and speed are noticeably much higher than that of a normal human being.
- Godly Stamina: Wolverine can fight for more than a day straight without tiring.
- Enhanced Senses: Wolverine has a keen sense of smell. He can determine familiar scents with only a couple of sniffs of the air. He can even use his keen sense to fight in the battlefield while blindfolded.
- Animal Empathy: Oddly enough, Wolverine has a supernatural ability to detect and sense the emotions of wild animals around him.
- Regeneration: Wolverine’s mutation gives him an accelerated healing factor, allowing him to heal up from any wounds, major or minor.
- Mental Resistance: His mutant physique allows him to be nigh-immune to mental powers. He managed to no-sell telepathy from Professor Xavier when he realized it.
- Master Martial Artist: In his century of life, Wolverine has become extremely proficient in hand-to-hand and sword combat. He can easily match the likes of Captain America in skill. He has also developed and mastered his own unique weapon style using his claws.
Who could play Wolverine in the MCU?
The decision on who could play Wolverine was drawn from a poll of over 20 actors. This poll was presented to our Facebook following who voted who they would like to see in the role. We had a few rules to follow similar to the Fantastic Four casting. Mainly no actor who currently had served in a major role within the MCU could be drafted as an option.
Anyway, let’s have a look at the actors chosen and kick it off with some honorable mentions.
Milo Gibson – 5.1%
Milo is the son of Hollywood actor Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon) and is known for his roles in All The Devil’s Men, Breaking and Exiting, Gangster Land, and Hacksaw Ridge. He is 175cm so a good bit taller than his comic book counterpart and only 29 years old so would look a little younger.
That being said he certainly has the acting ability, charisma, physique, and rugged good looks to do the part justice. And with age on his side, he could stick around in the role for a long time.
Richard Armitage – 5.1%
Richard was for me a surprising name on this list. This had nothing to do with his acting ability but more the fact that he stands at 189cm… That’s nearly a foot taller than Wolverine is in the comics. But one of Richard’s most famous roles was that of Thorin in the Hobbit trilogy. And Thorin is a dwarf so if he can pull that off then why not a 5’3 bundle of metal, blood, and anger???
He is also on the older side at 49 compared to most on this list but that doesn’t mean anything when it comes to the MCU.
5th Place – Tie – 7.7%
We had a three-way tie for 5th place. The previously mentioned Shia LaBeouf, Oscar Isaac, and Liam Hemsworth picking up just under 8% of the votes each.
Shia was mentioned earlier on in this article, as he is apparently being eyed up by Marvel for the role of either Ice-Man or Moon Knight (both of which I think he would do a superb job of). But his name came up on the list and I can certainly see why.
Since his role as Sam Witwicky in the Transformers franchise, he has had some off-screen problems. But like Robert Downey Jr. the MCU should not hold that against him.
In recent years he has performed in may indie films but has shown his versatility as an actor in the likes of The Peanut Butter Falcon and The Tax Collector.
Liam is the younger brother Chris Hemsworth (Thor), which may have some sway if he was looking for a way into the MCU.
He is one of the tallest entries on this list standing at 6’3 but he certainly has the look of a young wolverine about him with maybe a little more charm. He is also only 30 meaning he could stay int he role for many years.
Oscar is an actor who borders the rules as he played Apocalypse in the Sony release X-Men: Apocalypse. Although this isn’t an MCU movie it is an X-Men movie but we will leave that small point behind for now. I mean he scored almost 8% of the votes so I can’t ignore him.
Personally I also think he could pull the role off with ease. He has the look and charisma but also the acting versatility to bring a performance to the role that will be required to follow in the footsteps of Hugh Jackman.
4th Place – Keanu Reeves – 10.3%
4th place goes to one of the most talked-about actors who is yet to join the MCU, Keanu Reeves. Keanu needs no introduction and there is no doubt in my mind he would not make a fantastic Wolverine. Personally, I would probably prefer to see him as Ghost Rider, Adam Warlock, or even the Silver Surfer. I’m not going to talk any more about him. But just look at the fan art below of him as wolverine …
3rd Place – Taron Egerton – 12.8%
Taron Egerton is another name who has been linked to Wolverine for a while now, although he has debunked any theories saying he has not been approached by Marvel.
Taron is 175cm so again taller than the comic book version but still nowhere near the height of some of our entries on the list. He is also only 30 so again could maintain the role for many years.
In respect of his acting ability, he has proven himself over and over of his versatility with roles in the Kingsman, Robin Hood, and his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman.
1st Place – Tie – 15.4%
With our top two votes counting for over 30% of all votes, I would happy to offer either of these the role. These actors are Scott Eastwood and Zac Efron.
Scott is the son of legendary actor Clint Eastwood. He is most notable for his performances in Flags of Our Fathers, Gran Torino, Invictus, Pacific Rim, and suicide squad. As will all of the members on this list, he is taller than the comic books 5’3 standing at 6′ but I wouldn’t hold that against him.
He has a great presence on the screen and I think would thrive in a role like this. allowing him to show different sides of his acting range. He also looks the part, which is a bonus.
Zac is actually the smallest in height of all actors on this list, standing at 173cm. If he grew his mutton chops then there is no way he could be denied the role based on looks. His acting ability is not as varied as some of the others on this list, as he has predominantly starred in chick flicks and comedies. Or at least that’s what I thought until I watched his portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.
His acting in the film was superb and leaves me with no doubt he could do this role justice. But that’s just my thought.
