Who Are S.W.O.R.D. And Its Members?

S.W.O.R.D. stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department. They are a counterterrorism and intelligence group whose purpose is to deal with extraterrestrial threats to world security. They are the space-based counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D.

With rumours of an upcoming Disney+ show looking more and more likely, let’s take the opportunity to have a look at the organisation and some of its key members.

They first appeared in the comic Astonishing X-Men vol. 3 #6, and were created by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. The organisation was originally an offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. After the departure of Nick Fury, the relationship between the two groups became strained. They have close ties to members of the X-Men as well as various alien entities. The organisation’s base of operations is a space station called The Peak.

S.W.O.R.D. in the MCU

S.W.O.R.D. has already been mentioned and hinted at in previous films and T.V shows. They have only appeared in one though (which isn’t even part of the MCU). There are still several places they may appear before they get there own show. Let’s see where they have, or almost have, appeared already.

  • S.W.O.R.D. appeared in the animated series, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, which debuted on Disney XD.
  • They were intended to be introduced in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D series but were refused by Marvel Studios.
  • In a deleted post-credits scene in Thor, Dr Erik Selvig tells Jane Foster and Darcy to “Cross-reference with the S.W.O.R.D. database”. Due to complications with the rights to 2 members of S.W.O.R.D., the scene was removed.
  • In the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home, we saw Nick Fury and a group of Skrulls aboard a ship that is reminiscent of The Peak. Marvel is yet to confirm if this is related.
  • S.W.O.R.D. will appear in the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision.

S.W.O.R.D. Members

Over the years S.W.O.R.D. has had several members. We will take a look at some of the key members we have seen over the years.

Abigail Brand:

Special agent Abigail Brand is the commander of S.W.O.R.D. She is a Human Mutant/Alien Hybrid. Almost no details of her personal life have been revealed but it has been confirmed she is 28 years old. Her green hair comes from her alien father’s side. She also has the ability to coat both her hands in blue or red flame. The significance of either colour is yet to be confirmed but they are both potent enough to burn through most metals. She is also able to speak various alien languages that humans are unable to.

Any fans of the X-Men will undoubtedly recognise Dr Henry Philip “Hank” McCoy, AKA Beast. He is most distinguished by his coat of blue fur caused by his mutation, which also gives him ape-like superhuman strength and agility, along with over-sized hands and feet. He has a genius-level intellect. Despite his inhuman appearance, he is depicted as a well educated and brilliant man, known for his witty sense of humour. He is a world authority on biochemistry and genetics, and also the X-Men’s medical doctor and professor of Science and Mathematics. Hank is also a one-time boyfriend of Abigail Brand.

X-Men’s Shadowcat with Lockheed

As with Beast, Lockheed is mostly associated with the X-Men. He is an alien dragon and a long-time companion of Shadowcat (Kitty Pride). Lockheed is around the size of a cat with sharp claws and teeth, purple skin and 2 horns that protrude from the back of his head. He has wings that enable him to fly and can breath intense fire. He is a formidable combatant for his size and immune to telepathic probing. Lockheed can also understand human language and although he doesn’t speak it often he can speak English. Lockheed appeared in the recent 20th Century production of The New Mutants, as a companion to Illyana Rasputina.

Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman, was born in London, England. She gained her powers after being injected with a serum based on irradiated spiders blood to help cure her of uranium exposure. She has been a member of the New Avengers, Secret Avengers and S.W.O.R.D. amongst others. She has similar abilities to Spider-Man along with pheromone manipulation and bio-electric energy projection. With the news that Sony (SPUMC) are developing a Spider-Woman movie, this would a great way for the two studios to cross over.

While this is not the complete list of S.W.O.R.D. members, these are the ones we feel may be introduced the soonest. Some of the other members are:

  • SYDREN: A telepath with the ability to sense things remotely. Sydren also has some animalistic characteristics like a heightened sense of smell.
  • MANIFOLD TYGER: An alien with a feline appearance, he is a technician aboard The Peak. He has super-human strength and durability.
  • DEATHS HEAD: A bounty hunting robot who captures alien fugitives for S.W.O.R.D. He has many abilities including flight, marksmanship, electronic interaction and time travel.
