Rumours that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will appear in Spider-Man 3 alongside Tom Holland have been circulating since last October. With the film set to feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and previous villains Electro and Doctor Octopus set to return, those rumours have only grown stronger over time.
Last week, Tom Holland described the upcoming Spider-Man threequel as “the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever“. When Variety quizzed the star in the same interview about the rumoured casting of Maguire and Garfield, Holland stated that he still doesn’t know:
In another interview that took place in December, but was only published today, Holland was once again asked about the rumour. Holland told Esquire a conflicting answer in which denied that Maguire and Garfield will appear in Spider-Man 3.
Given Holland’s history of spilling major spoilers, it appears as if he has learned his lesson. There could, of course, be several reasons why there are conflicting answers between the two interviews. The first could be that something has changed between December’s interview where he flat out denied the rumours and the more recent one where he stated he didn’t know. It could also mean that the rumours are false, or that Holland is being honest and doesn’t actually know himself.
Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to release on December 17th, 2021.
