Salma Hayek Explains Why Eternals is Different to Other MCU Films

The Eternals film remains one of the MCU’s biggest mysteries. The film was initially scheduled to release last year but was delayed to November 2021 due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Aside from its star-studded cast, very little is known about the film’s plot. Kevin Feige has hinted that the story may span tens of thousands of years, but without a trailer, it’s hard to imagine just what Marvel Studio has produced.

Kevin Feige recently revealed that director Chloe Zhao’s pitch for Eternals was the best he’s ever heard, and Angelina Jolie who plays Thena in the film described it as “good crazy.” In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Salma Hayek gave some insight into why Eternals will be different to anything we’ve seen from the MCU previously.

Hayek, who will play the role of Ajak in the film, said that Eternals has “the special vibe to it that is unique”, whilst also sharing how excited she is about her character and the cast.

I think that it definitely has its own DNA within the Marvel universe. It is different. It was directed by a woman [Zhao] and we didn’t do most of the thing in the studio. They’re real locations which is unusual for Marvel. I’m very excited about the film, it definitely has the special vibe to it that is unique. I’m really excited about it and I love my character and I love the cast.

In addition to Hayek, Eternals has lined up a list of stars for the movie including Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, and Barry Keoghan. The film is likely to be a far departure from the modern-day settings we have seen in the MCU so far. The characters first appeared in The Eternals #1 released in 1976. The story focused on the war between the Eternals and the Deviants — two divergent races created one million years ago by the Celestials. There are even rumours that we could see a young Thanos in the film.
