Tom Holland recently described Spider-Man 3 as “the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made“, and judging by the number of rumoured cast members, that may well be the case. We already know that Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus will return for the threequel. Now it seems that Sony and Marvel are bringing back another former bad guy.
Rumours that Willem Dafoe will appear in Spider-Man 3 circulated a couple of months ago. At the point, practically every actor from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films was rumoured to appear. Today, it appears as if there may be some truth to the initial report.
Geeks Worldwide have revealed that a close and reliable source of theirs has confirmed that Dafoe has “reported to the set” of Spider-Man 3 today. Unfortunately, there were no further details on how big the actor’s role will be in the movie, or if he will return as Norman Osborn from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3.
There is a chance that Dafoe could be playing a new iteration of Norman Osborn for the MCU or another character completely. However, the confirmation that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will appear in Spider-Man 3 strongly suggests that at least some of the film will explore a live-action Spider-Verse. Dafoe’s Green Goblin was one of many highlights from Sam Raimi’s trilogy of films, which makes it hard to believe he would be cast as anyone else in the MCU.
Tom Holland recently revealed that there is still a “lot more shooting to do” on Spider-Man 3. If today’s rumour of Willem Dafoe appearing on the set is true, it will add another tick to the recent huge list of Spider-Man 3 leaks that appeared online a few weeks ago.
Spider-Man 3 is currently scheduled to release on December 17th, 2021.
