Back in January of 2020, Sony Pictures dropped the official teaser trailer for Morbius. The internet was torn apart and fans were in awe as they saw a glimpse of Jared Leto as the biochemist Michael Morbius.
One of the biggest surprises in the teaser trailer was the appearance of Michael Keaton in a white jumpsuit. The costume seemed to be his jail uniform from the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming where he played Adrian Toomes. While this seemed like a large confirmation, there was no official word if he was portraying the same character. However, there was a picture of Spider-Man spray-painted onto a wall with the word murderer written on it. This seemed to be pertaining to the web-slinger being blamed for Mysterio’s death at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, this was not a picture of the MCU’s Spider-Man. So this does not 100% determine if Morbius‘s solo origin story connects to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker or not.
It was recently reported over at Small Screen, that Jared Leto wants a shared universe with Spider-Man and his adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The report originally came from We Got This Covered, so it is far from confirmed. This comes around the same time that rumors have spread like wildfire that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will return as their respected Peter Parkers in Holland’s third solo outing. It was quoted by Small Screen:
With the report coming from Collider saying that both actors would return for Spider-Man 3. This seems to be exactly what Sony wants for their Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. While this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt (as all rumors should), it does seem probable due to the fact that Sony clearly wants their characters to meet up with the MCU’s Spidey.
Morbius is set to release on March 19th, 2021, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage which will come out on June 25th, 2021. These releases will likely give us the answers we seek!
