Following the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman last August, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Black Panther 2. Thankfully, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reassured fans at Disney’s Investor Day that the sequel to the studios’ first Academy Award-winning film is still in the works. Feige also confirmed that the role of T’Challa will not be recast.

Director and writer Ryan Coogler is said to be hard at work on the sequel, which will continue to explore Wakanda and its characters. It’s unsure at this point if Marvel will crown a new Black Panther in the film, however, that hasn’t stopped fans sharing who they would like to see take on the mantle. One name that continues to be mentioned is that of Michael. B. Jordan. The actor’s villainous character, Erik ‘Killmonger’ Stevens died at the end of Black Panther, however, a revival and redemption arc in Black Panther 2 be interesting to watch.

In a recent interview with People.com, Michael B. Jordan reflected on the death of his friend.

that’s something that is very, very near and dear to my heart for a lot of obvious reasons. [I] had a really tough year losing somebody close to me. And what that means for that franchise is it was devastating.

When asked if he would be open to returning to the role of Killmonger for Black Panther 2, Jordan gave an enthusiastic reply:

But being in that world in a character that I loved playing, and working with [writer/director Ryan Coogler] and all that good stuff, it’s family. We created a family over there. So to be able to be in that world again is something that, I think, will always be on the table in some capacity.

Only time will tell if Michael B. Jordan will receive a call to reprise the role, but it will no doubt give fans hope that the star is seemingly willing to return to the franchise. Whatever Marvel Studios and Ryan Cooger decide to do, it’s clear that they will try to be as respectful to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman as possible.

Black Panther 2 is currently scheduled to release on July 8th, 2022.
