Following the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 that Mahershala Ali will star in the MCU’s Blade, we haven’t heard much about the project. At the Disney Investor Day in December, Kevin Feige teased that the project is “coming together” and that Marvel Studios would provide more updates “very, very soon.” Now it seems the first of those updates has arrived, thanks to a report from the Hollywood Reporter.
According to THR, Marvel Studios has recruited Stacy Osei-Kuffour as the head writer for the MCU’s Blade. Her hiring follows a “meticulous search” by Marvel Studios who spent the last six months meeting with various writers. Blade star Mahershala Ali was directly involved in the search.
Osei-Kuffour is perhaps best known for being part of the writing team behind the HBO series Watchmen. She was also nominated for an Emmy for outstanding writing in a comedy series for the Hulu series Pen15. The writer has also worked on the Amazon series Hunters and the HBO thriller Run.
Mahershala Ali revealed in an interview last year that Blade will bring a “darker tone to the MCU.” This should hopefully make for a perfect match given Osei-Kuffour’s involvement with Watchmen, which is a similarly dark series.
With only two names currently linked to the project, it’s likely that we’ll hear more news in the coming month as Marvel Studios finds a director and other cast members for its supernatural horror.
Blade doesn’t have a release date yet, but it is thought that the film will arrive in 2022.
