Iron Man 3. Some loved the film while others chose to forget it (We’re talking about you Mandarin). Nonetheless, the ending moments of the movie heavily impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. However, did you know that a key scene actually featured a CGI version of Tony Stark?
Let’s backtrack a bit. During production, Downey suffered from an ankle injury, which put the star out of action for roughly six weeks. Rather than delay the release of the film, the VFX team at Marvel had another solution. Use a body double and CGI Tony’s face into the scene seamlessly.
In an interview with IGN, VFX supervisor Chris Townsend spoke on how he and Weta Digital achieved this.
He continued saying:
Though CGI isn’t exactly foreign to Marvel films, it’s a bit nuts to think about how it was utilized in a non-action-based scene. Did you happen to notice CGI Tony Stark? If you need a reminder, here’s the final scene linked below. Needless to say, spoiler warning!
