La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine – Who is She?

The build-up to the fifth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier teased a cameo that would be “grounded” compared to the likes of Thor but would excite fans. While fans eagerly anticipated a major player like Black Panther or maybe even Jennifer Walters, we were ultimately introduced to La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine.

The character was originally intended to be introduced in the Black Widow movie. Unfortunately, due to the delays to the movie, it has not yet been released and the character has now been revealed in the Disney+ show.

So who is La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine in the comics? What could she mean for the MCU? Well, let’s take a look at what we know so far.

Who is La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine

La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine was a citizen of Italy. After both of the Contessa’s parents were killed for aiding an unnamed resistance movement, she decided that she would carry on their work so the deaths were not in vain. She was eventually recruited as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. At the end of her training, she had an altercation with Nick Fury but eventually, the two became lovers.

She was a skilled agent and eventually made her way up to becoming the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s female task force, Femme Force. She was also assigned to the position of liaison to the United Kingdom where she worked alongside Captain Britain and Union Jack amongst others.

During the Secret Invasion series, the Contessa was replaced by a Skrull imposter who was spying on Nick Fury in order to gain intelligence. Fury became suspicious and killed the imposter which is when Fury discovered the invasion.

During the Secret Warriors series, it was revealed that Hydra has been controlling S.H.I.E.L.D from the beginning. The Contessa killed the current Madame Hydra taking over the position, but it was later revealed that the Contessa was actually a mole. She continued the work her parents had been doing for a secret Soviet group called Leviathan.

La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine in the MCU

During the fifth episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we are introduced to La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, who is portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She approaches John Walker after he is stripped of the Captain America title and states that the people she works for may have need of his service.

This is where the speculation begins.

With the news that she was originally intended to be introduced in Black Widow, we need to make some guesses into what capacity. She may have been another agent or even a trainer in the Red Room. She may even be Taskmaster. There are so many possibilities here that we need to take a look at what we know so far.

In the comics, she is a triple agent. She is ultimately working for Leviathan who could be the organisation she is talking of in the show. This to me seems unlikely as we have had no mention to date of this organisation. With the series introducing several new players already it may be a bit too much to take in. Especially with only one episode left.

The next option would be S.H.I.E.L.D. This to me seems most likely as we have already had plenty of exposure to the organization and it would make sense that they would look to recruit a soldier such as Walker. I mean, he worked for them for a time in the comics.

The next would be Hydra. Hydra has been missing for a while in the MCU but they still pop up from time to time. They are also known to infiltrate other organisations so it would not be unreasonable to assume they are behind some of the other powers at play.

Another option could be the Power Broker or Sharon Carter. The rumours are still around that the Power Broker is Sharon Carter and after she sent Batroc to work with the Flag Smashers, we can assume that even if she isn’t the Power Broker she seems to have built her own group of agents.

While her future in the MCU is all guesswork at the moment, one thing is for certain. Fans are very excited to see what the future has in store for La Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine in the MCU. Hopefully, more will be revealed in the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
