Avengers: Endgame signified a large change for the future of the MCU. With Black Widow and Iron Man already gone, Captain America hung up his shield at the end of the film when he went back in time to return the Infinity Stones and never returned. Instead, Sam, Bucky and Hulk were greeted by a much older version of Steve Rogers who revealed that he had stayed in the past and lived his life with Peggy Carter.
With Steve Rogers retired, it came as a surprise in January when reports emerged that actor Chris Evans was in discussions to return. Evans dismissed the rumours shortly afterwards when he tweeted “News to me”. While many took his comments as confirmation that the report wasn’t true, others assumed Evans was simply being coy in an attempt to keep his return under wraps.
Anthony Mackie, who’s character Sam Wilson was picked by Steve Rogers to carry the famous shield, was also asked about the report of Chris Evans’ return. He revealed that he was fishing when the report broke.
Finally, Sebastian Stan who plays the long-time friend of Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, was also asked if he was aware of the rumour.
Surprisingly, Kevin Feige’s response wasn’t an outright no, but it does suggest that Chris Evans was telling the truth in his tweet. Ultimately, only time will tell if Marvel has any plans for Steve Rogers to return in the MCU. For the moment, however, it seems that the studio is firmly concentrating on Captain America’s successor to the shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
You can watch the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ this Friday.
