Ever since his debut in Season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil, Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle has been a fan favourite, almost in the same league as Charlie Cox as The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. In 2017, he got his own Netflix series called Marvel’s The Punisher starring him as the titular character. The show went on for two seasons and was very successful among the Marvel TV fan base. Unfortunately, after the second season premiered in January of 2019, the show was cancelled. This was among a series of cancellations that started with Iron Fist and ended with Jessica Jones after the premiere of its third season. This included Netflix’s Luke Cage after two successful seasons as well.
The rights have returned to Marvel for all of the characters except Jessica Jones and The Punisher. With this knowledge, fans are getting excited to learn what Marvel has in store for the Defenders. It has even gone as far as a campaign titled #SaveDaredevil that was trending on Twitter last week to bring back Charlie’s Matt Murdock. With that being said, Jon was in an interview recently with Greek Show House where he was asked about the future of his character, he had this to say:
“It’s unbelievably humbling how much people sort of responded to this version of Frank, and I can’t tell you how much it means to me because he means so much to me. He’s in my blood, he’s in my bones… So it’s not about whether we do it, it’s about getting it right, and doing the version that the fans really deserve. We’ll see. I mean, all of those decisions are made in rooms I am not invited into… But Frank’s always there, he’s always a part of me. And when we get the call to go, I’ll be ready, and I’ll make sure that I do everything I can to make sure that we do it right, or we won’t do it at all.”
This pretty much confirms what fans have been aware of, Bernthal loved bringing Frank Castle to life. And with the character’s rights returning to Marvel in 2021, even he is hopeful that his character will return. He notes, however, that the revival of his iteration of the character is based on decisions that are out of his own hands. Rumors have gone around saying that Kevin Feige himself wants Jon back, whether this would be for a season 3 or a movie is up for speculation. We can predict, however, that if he does return, his character will be rebooted. Fan castings have come to fruition before, as we see with Rosario Dawson’s recent portrayal of Ashoka Tano on Disney+’s The Mandalorian. This should definitely give us Punisher fans hope.
