Chris Evans debuted as Steve Rogers in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to portray him for 8 years. In 2019, he played Cap for what MCU fans thought was the last time in Avengers: Endgame. After helping to defeat Thanos, Steve went back in time to return the infinity stones and seemingly decided to enjoy the life he never got to live. At the end of Endgame, old man Steve Rogers gave his shield to Sam Wilson. With the release of Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the question of who will take over the mantle of Captain America will be at the forefront of the series. Will it be Wyatt Russell’s US Agent or will be The Falcon?
News broke today from Deadline that Chris Evans is in talks with Marvel Studios to return as Cap for one Marvel property with the possibility of a second return. Sources say that there is uncertainty as to whether the deal is 100%. Evans’ return is said to be similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s inclusion following the end of his trilogy in 2013. Chris has previously stated that after Avengers 4 he would be hanging his shield up:
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe heading the way of the multiverse, there is always the possibility his return could be related to such. It’s also a possibility that Bucky or Sam could visit Old Man Cap for advice or even just to see him. While there are multiple possibilities of the reason behind his return, fans are excited to see what the future has in store for Cap.
Since the news broke, Chris Evans tweeted “News to me”, seemingly downplaying the reports.
News of Chris Evans’ return did seem to come out of the blue, but his reply doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not happening. It’s important to note that shortly before being confirmed by Kevin Feige to play the lead in She-Hulk, Tatiana Maslany denied that she had landed the role. Given the fact that the report came from Deadline, there’s likely more to this story, but unfortunately, we’ll have to wait to find out.
