If you have seen any of the Thor movies, then you are aware that Idris Elba portrayed Heimdall, the protector of the Bifrost. He played the role all the way from Thor in 2011 until Avengers: Infinity War. He has been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe all the way since phase 1. Heimdall had a smaller role in the first two movies, but he returned with a larger role in Thor: Ragnarok. Sadly though, as many know, Heimdall was killed by Thanos at the beginning of Avengers 3.
Heimdall was present through the entire Infinity Saga. He did everything to serve his king from Odin to Thor and to protect Asgard. It has been said that his character was not utilized as he should have been. Whether or not this is your opinion, it is a fact that his character is no longer active in the MCU. With this in mind, death is not entirely the end (as said by T’Challa) in Marvel Comics. The MCU is different than the comics, but they could very well find a way to bring his character back. Whether it would be through The Multiverse or in a flashback, there is now speculation that Elba’s character will return for the next installment of the Thor franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Taika Waititi, the director of both Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, posted a picture on his Instagram that includes Idris Elba:
At surface value, this does not necessarily mean that Idris will feature in Thor 4. Taika recently worked on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad with Idris Elba. It could be that the pair have become friends and are spending time together in their free time. As we reported back in October, filming is set to start soon for Thor 4. It is very interesting with the timing of this post, being that Taika is about to begin working on his next MCU film.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to debut in theaters in February of 2022. It will feature some reoccurring actors: Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Taika Waititi as Korg and none other than Chris Hemsworth as The God of Thunder himself. Other characters will be returning, including Korg’s friend Miek and members of the Guardian of the Galaxy. It has been confirmed that Christ Pratt’s Star-Lord and Vin Diesel’s Groot will be joining the cast. We also know that Christian Bale will portray the villain for the film. As said by The Hollywood Reporter, this film will include a cast that feels like the likes of an “Avengers 5” film.
At this point, there is so much we don’t know yet, but we can definitely hope to see his loyal character again!
