News for the upcoming Spider-Man 3 movie has been booming recently. First, news broke late in 2020 that Jamie Foxx would reprise his role as Electro. This was a bit confusing at the time as he had previously played the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Later on rumors of Alfred Molina returning as Dr. Otto Octavius from Spider-Man 2 from the Raimi-verse.
This film is clearly stacked with characters confirmed to return as well as some rumored to return including both Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s respective Peter Parkers. Things became clearer that this film would feature the multiverse when Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed to return as Doctor Stephen Strange.
Zendaya, the actress who portrays the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of MJ, did an interview with Variety lately in which she was asked about the process of filming the Homecoming threequel. In the interview, she briefly mentions what it is like filming what is both a large Superhero blockbuster and a more grounded story set in the MCU:
Let’s take a moment to break down this quote: first, she confirms that it is the third Spider-Man solo outing. And then goes on to say “these things go by so fast”. Probably referring to the fact that production has gone by so fast since it began back in November of 2020. This also refers to how quick they get to filming the next Spider-Man movie after they release one. But she also says, they have “a lot left to do”. This would be expected as filming goes until March.
Next, she says “It’s like running from aliens and things you can’t see”. This is interesting. It could be confirming the involvement of aliens to the plot, but with Peter’s identity crisis and the multiverse, what more could Marvel and Sony pack into this film? The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of Spider-Man and aliens are the symbiotes. Does this confirm that Venom or his alien race shows up in some capacity in Homecoming 3? We will have to wait and see.
She ends the quote by talking about how playing a teenager is an escape for her since she is in her early 20’s. This escapism can also refer to how fans leave the reality of their own lives when we sit down to watch a movie. Either way, her quote builds up anticipation for the release of Spidey’s next solo adventure!
