Phase four of the MCU is set to bring in some big changes. When the Infinity Saga came to its triumphant end in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had changed for good. In one movie, we lost half of the original Avengers team. With Iron Man and Black Widow now dead, and Cap passing over his shield, many have been wondering what will happen to Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye in the future.

Thankfully, we know we will get another chance to see Chris Hemsworth take on the role of Thor Odinson when Thor: Love and Thunder releases in 2022. Whilst we don’t know much about the film yet, the early signs are promising. The script for the film has been described as “one of the best” by Hemsworth, and returning director Taika Waititi has described the development process “like 10-year-olds told us what should be in a movie and we said yes to every single thing.”

At last year’s SDCC, Kevin Feige revealed that Natalie Portman’s character Jane Foster will return. He also revealed that she will pick up the hammer and become the Goddess of Thunder, as she had done in the 2014 comic books storyline. Most people connected the dots and assumed that would mean Hemsworth would retire from the MCU.

In an interview with Elle Man, Chris Hemsworth was asked directly if he would retiring his character and passing the name and Mjölnir to another actor. The star’s response can be read below: (The interview was published in Polish and translated to English by The Direct using Google Translate)

Are you crazy ?! I’m not going into any retirement period (laughs). Thor is way too young for that. It is only 1500 years old! It is definitely not a film that I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so.

When asked about the upcoming sequel, Hemsworth once again reiterated that he had a lot more fun reading the Thor: Love and Thunder script than Thor: Ragnarok‘s, saying:

After reading the script, I can say that I am very excited. For sure there will be a lot of love and a lot of lightning in this production. I’m glad that after all that happened in Avengers: Endgame, I’m still part of the Marvel Universe and we can continue the story of Thor. Of course, I can’t tell you anything about the plot, but to satisfy your curiosity, I’ll say that I had a lot more fun reading the script than on Thor: Ragnarok, and that proves something, because that movie was brilliant

Thankfully, Hemsworth’s comments dismiss the rumours that the actor would be leaving the MCU after Love and Thunder. Although it remains to be seen if Jane Foster takes the Goddess of Thunder title on a permanent basis, or if she hands it back to Hemsworth at some point in the film. Whatever happens, it sounds like Thor: Love and Thunder is shaping up nicely.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release on February 11th, 2022.
