After the conclusion to Captain America’s story arc in Avengers: Endgame, most fans (including myself) were left feeling Steve Rogers finally got the life he deserved. Having starred in the Captain America Trilogy along with four Avengers movies he finally handed his shield over to Falcon in Endgame, after he travelled back in time to live out the life he could have had with Peggy Carter.
In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Chris Evans opened up on a possible return to the MCU. He has stated he is willing to return to the MCU as Captain America but only on one condition.
Speaking to Graham Norton the the 38-year-old had the following to say:
I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited.
He is right! I mean, it would certainly undo all the emotion that was poured into those final scenes. If he was to come back it would certainly need to be done right and as Evans says, not just a cash grab for the sake of it. He also had the following to say about his time playing Captain America:
Everything from Endgame was really special to me because my headspace was very much in the reflective, grateful part of it. You almost feel like you’re living a memory; you feel like it’s almost like the moment’s already passed. So you’re really just trying to soak it in and just appreciate what this journey has been like.
Similarly, Robert Downey Jr. was asked about a return as Iron Man on The Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan pointed out that with the introduction of time-travel and the confirmation of the multiverse then even a dead character can be brought back. RDJ had the following to say:
Let me ask you a question. If I pick the jersey back up and put it on, wouldn’t you feel a little bit like, ‘oh craaap’.
After a bit of enthusing from Rogan, the 55-year-old didn’t exactly say no to a return but just as Evans said, it would need to be for the right reason.
There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff
So we may see a cameo from either of them and I would certainly think this would have to be after a reasonable period of time. We may also see an alternate version of either character.
