2019’s Captain Marvel film was a box office smash. It grossed over £1.1 billion worldwide on a rumoured budget over $175 million. It also became the first female-led superhero movie to reach the 10-digit milestone. The sequel, Captain Marvel 2 is set to release in 2022, and it appears that Marvel Studios have found their director for the movie.
A fresh report from Deadline states that Nia DaCosta who directed the hotly-anticipated Candyman has signed up to direct Captain Marvel 2. The report states that Marvel Studios has met with several people about the job over recent months. The decision was made final after DaCosta and other leading candidates met with Kevin Feige over the weekend. Variety added that other directors approached for the job include Olivia Wilde (Booksmart) and Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader and Russian Doll).
Marvel and Disney have both declined to comment.
DaCosta has seen her stock rise sharply after directing the critically acclaimed indie film, Little Woods, with writer and producer Jordan Peele hand-picking her to direct Candyman. She will become the fourth women to direct a Marvel Studios movie following Anna Boden, who directed the first Captain Marvel, Cate Shortland (Black Widow) and Chloe Zhao (Eternals).
Not much is known about Captain Marvel 2 at this time. Brie Larson will reprise her role a Carol Danvers and the script will be written by WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell.
Captain Marvel 2 is currently set to open on July 8th, 2022.
