Last August, reports began to break that Marvel Studios had recruited Nia DaCosta to direct Captain Marvel 2. The news was finally officially confirmed by Kevin Feige during December’s Disney’s Investor Day presentation. The deal makes DaCosta the youngest director to helm an MCU movie to date.

In her career so far, DaCosta has directed two films. Her first director’s role was 2018’s critically acclaimed Little Woods, which she also wrote. John Peel the hand-picked her for the hotly anticipated Candyman, which has now been delayed until August this year.

In a recent interview on A Little Late With Lilly Singh, lead-actor Brie Larson was asked to share her thoughts about Nia DaCosta involvement in the sequel. Whilst production for Captain Marvel 2 is yet to begin, Larson revealed her excitement to be working with DaCosta in the future.

It’s amazing, and I’m so excited that it’s announced and I can talk about it. Nia is amazing and she got the job because she is the best person for the job. That’s one of my favourite parts about this. She just gave an incredible presentation and I’m inspired by her. She has confidence and it’s a big deal to step into like, this thing, the Marvel universe, it’s this huge thing! And to have a leader who’s just like ,’Yeah, I’m meant to be here.’

Later in the interview, Larson was asked about her own experience of stepping into the Marvel universe and if it was a “no-brainer” to play Carol Danvers. Her response can be seen below:

If it was just, ‘Hey, will you take a look at this script? There’s this character, Carol Danvers. What do you think?’ it’s an easy yes,” added Larson. “But there’s the stuff that comes with it. Like, you’re talking about the famous part. There’s this other thing that is so unknowable and so hard to wrap your head around and understand, and I’m pretty introverted. So for me, it was many months of thinking about it and understanding, ‘Can I do this? Can I bring that energy into my life and be happy?’ It was a big deal, and I remember exactly where I was when I said, ‘I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do this.’ And I love it. I love playing Captain Marvel. And my life is actually…I know it sounds really annoying, but it is actually very normal. I can do all the things that I did previously.
