Black Widow Director Says the Movie will See Natasha “Hand the Baton” to Yelena

Black Widow will kick start phase four of the MCU in November (October in the UK), after being delayed from its May release due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Whilst much of the movie’s plot is still being kept a closely guarded secret, director Cate Shortland has confirmed one fan theory in a recent interview.

Ever since it was revealed that Black Widow will feature the character Yelena Belova, many fans have theorised that she will take on the Black Widow mantle. With Natasha Romanoff’s death during Avengers: Endgame, there’s a space for Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, to become Black Widow as she has appeared in Marvel comics.

In an interview with Empire, Cate Shortland has confirmed that Black Widow will setup Yelena to be the new Black Widow in future movies:

[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland tells Empire. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like,‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.

Shortland also touched upon the fact that the movie also serves as a fitting end to Natasha Romanoff’s story arc in the MCU:

In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral. She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.
