The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Cumberbatch’s appearance in Spider-Man 3 earlier today. The report states that Stephen Strange will take on the role of a mentor in the film in a similar way to Tony Stark’s role in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Nick Fury’s in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The move will give Peter Parker a father figure to confide in, whilst also adding greater star power and a deeper link to the MCU.
Last week, the news broke that Jamie Foxx will reprise his Electro role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the upcoming Tom Holland sequel. Rumours then began to circulate a few days later that the film could also star previous web-slingers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Magure. With the confirmation of the Sorceror Supreme’s appearance, it now seems certain that the movie will deal with the multiverse.
Deadline has since corroborated the news of Cumberbatch’s appearance in Spider-Man film. They also state that the actor will shoot the next iteration of the Spider-Man franchise before moving on to shoot his own sequel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Variety later revealed that Spider-Man 3 will now begin filming in November.
MCU fans are set to be introduced to the idea of the multiverse later this year when WandaVision releases on Disney+. Kevin Feige has announced previously that WandaVision will tie directly into the Doctor Strange sequel which releases in 2022. Rumour has it that Wanda will cause chaos in the multiverse during the show which will continue to impact phase 4 of the MCU.
Spider-Man 3 will is currently scheduled to release on December 17th of next year.
